This year the Olympic National Forest is providing the 2006 Christmas tree that will stand in front of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington D.C. during the holidays.

Hi. I’m Claire Turner with 4-H Network News – a youth run media club based in Port Hadlock, WA.

The 65-foot Pacific Silver fir will be decorated with 10,000 LED lights and over 3,000 ornaments handmade by Washington youth.

On December 6th, The Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives will light the 45 –year-old tree during a ceremony viewed on C-Span nationwide.

The biggest challenge organizing the evergreen state's national gift has been financial. You can help support our community's spirit of giving by buying a $4 Capitol Christmas Tree Lapel Pin at: Capitol Christmas Tree 2006 dot org.

Oregon provided the Capitol Christmas tree in 2002, Idaho in 2003,
Virginia in 2004, and New Mexico last year shipped a 80-foot Engelmann Spruce 1,816 miles to Washington D.C.

This year Washington State is giving the nation's Capitol a magnificent 45-year-old Pacific Silver fir that grew naturally on a steep bank above the headwaters of the Wynoochee River in the Olympic National Forest.

Happy Holidays! I’m Claire Turner with 4-H Network News.

Tracyton student to light Capitol Christmas Tree

What started as a classroom project to design holiday ornaments, has led to an all-expenses paid trip to Washington D.C. for the Capitol Christmas Tree lighting.

Micah Joe (Photo), an 8-year-old Tracyton Elementary School student, was just following directions when his holiday season was given a jump start. Students at various elementary schools across the state were invited to design ornaments for the Capitol tree, which was selected from the Olympic National Forest in Washington state.

The ornaments that Micah and his class decorated were Raven heads, decorated in black and red line forms. His teacher Amy Smith said the class only had a couple of days to put together their ornaments, one she laminated for the contest, and the others the students were able to keep.

Although all of the students had the opportunity to submit their ornaments into the Washington D.C. contest, the parent waiver is what was randomly selected. Micah’s form was selected by Mike Gregoire, Gov. Chris Gregoire’s husband, from more than 3,000 forms.

Out of all 50 states, it was Washington’s year to donate a tree to be placed on Capitol Hill. Because Washington was selected, the state also had the opportunity to send one student to light it. Micah was that student. (Read More)

Central Kitsap

Jennifer Joe was checking her e-mail last week when she noticed a subject line that said, "Congratulations ?"

Thinking it was just another sneaky e-mail ploy, she nearly deleted it. She didn’t though, and now her son, Micah, 8, will fly to Washington, D.C., next month to light the Capitol Christmas tree.

"I had to call his teacher to make sure it was for real," Joe said. "I still have a hard time believing it, actually."

This year is Washington state’s turn among the 50 states to donate the Christmas tree for Capitol Hill. The tree was provided by the Olympic National Forest in partnership with the Northwest Interpretive Association. As the Capitol Christmas tree provider, Washington state gets to send a student to light it.

Micah, a second-grader at Tracyton Elementary, was selected by Mike Gregoire, husband of Gov. Chris Gregoire, from more than 3,000 students who submitted Christmas ornaments for the tree. His mother barely remembers signing the parental waiver that was randomly selected for the honor. (Read More)

OLYMPIA (November 13, 2006) – Gov. Christine Gregoire is used to being asked hard-hitting questions by veteran journalists, but usually the reporters aren't quite so young.

Eight-year-old Claire Turner of Port Townsend interviewed the governor in Olympia on Nov. 6 for 4-H Network News.

"Are you excited about having the Capitol Christmas tree from Washington state this year?" she asked.
"Claire, I think this is just great," said Gregoire.

"We are going to share with the entire country one of the finest trees we have in Washington state so they can see just how gorgeous Washington state is . . ."

The third grader is one of about 15 Jefferson County young people involved in the youth-run Port-Hadlock-based news station.
